The Vietnam Pepper Association assessed that pepper prices decreased due to the 1% decrease in the Vietnamese Dong compared to the USD (23,580 VND/USD). In the last 10 days of July, domestic pepper prices increased sharply, after some agents increased their purchases again with the expectation that exports to China would gradually improve in the last months of the year. However, the situation of buying and selling real goods in the market was not too exciting even though pepper prices were pushed up significantly. At the same time, prices also fluctuated because some areas of agents purchased a lot but others were quite quiet. Therefore, in mid-August, domestic black pepper prices decreased again. Experts said that weak demand is still a factor holding back the recovery of pepper prices. Market demand is facing the risk of decline as inflation increases in many countries around the world, especially in Europe and the US – the two largest pepper consuming markets in our country. In addition, the US Federal Reserve (Fed) has continuously raised interest rates recently to curb inflation, causing the USD to flow back into the US and increase in value compared to other currencies, which is also one of the reasons. This has led to many countries lacking USD and being forced to restrict foreign currency for importing non-essential goods, including pepper. Some countries such as Pakistan and Egypt, which have been major pepper export markets for Vietnam in recent years, are facing this situation.
