Summer-autumn rice is ripe in the fields, many types of agricultural products such as longan, banana, lemon, pineapple… of farmers in the Mekong Delta are at dirt cheap prices, even falling all over the ground without any traders coming to buy. This is a reality that has been happening and many people believe that farmers in this land have never encountered such a situation before. The reason why rice is unsold and fruits cannot be sold is known to everyone because of the broken supply chain, all provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta are implementing social distancing according to Directive No. 16 of the Prime Minister. In particular, many provinces have established strict checkpoints, with regulations that drivers and assistants, traders… must have negative test results to enter the locality, causing congestion in the circulation of goods, while many large wholesale markets and traditional markets are closed. The whole region still has more than 700,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice in the ripening stage, expected to finish harvesting in mid-September this year with an output of about 4 million tons; There are still nearly 1.1 million tons of fruit being harvested. With the price of summer-autumn rice falling, farmers can delay harvesting and can store it for a few weeks to survive, but fruits cannot be delayed. After harvesting, if there are no traders, they will rot and have to be thrown away. It is unimaginable that 1kg of grade 1 longan a few months ago cost 15,000 – 20,000 VND (at the garden), but now farmers in Can Tho only sell it for 8,000 VND/kg; lemons in Hau Giang or Vinh Long cost 8,000 – 10,000 VND/kg, but now they are only 2,000 – 3,000 VND/kg, and yet they cannot be sold. #news #nhanong #mientay
