Accordingly, Indonesian Lampung black pepper is 3,827 USD/ton; Indian black pepper is 6,316 USD/ton; Malaysian black pepper and Vietnamese black pepper are stable at 5,900 USD/ton and 3,350 USD/ton, respectively, Brazilian black pepper is stable at 2,650 USD/ton. For white pepper, Vietnamese white pepper is at 4,900 USD/ton. The Ministry of Industry and Trade assessed that in September 2022, pepper export prices on the market fluctuated inconsistently. While black and white pepper export prices in Indonesia increased and Malaysia remained stable, they both decreased in Vietnam and Brazil. Currently, Brazil is entering the pepper harvest season, with output expected to increase by 10% compared to 2021 to 98,000 tons in 2022. India’s pepper output is expected to increase slightly to 68,000 tons. However, Vietnam’s pepper output is expected to decrease due to unfavorable weather conditions. According to the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), Vietnam’s pepper supply in 2022 is estimated at 280 – 290 thousand tons (including 175 thousand tons of output; 40 thousand tons of imports and 80 thousand tons of inventory from 2021). In the short term, world pepper prices are forecast to continue to decrease due to the strong increase in the USD. The Fed’s interest rate hike to limit inflation has pushed USD back into the US. This has caused many countries to lack USD and forced them to restrict foreign currency for importing non-essential goods, including pepper.
